Oral History Project July 2007 We are delighted to announce that The Friends have been successful in our application to the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) for a grant to set up and run an Oral History project recording the working life stories of former and serving Police Officers - Policing Community and Diversity in London 1946-2007: The Copper's Story. In awarding this grant, the HLF see this project as important to our national heritage and has rigorously assessed our team as qualified to carry it out. It will focus on everyday officers whose dedicated and essential service does not normally appear in books, articles and other publications. The outcomes of the project will be an edited series of DVDr sound recordings, mind-mapped and introduced by a highly regarded police historian. It will interface with youth work and teaching the of young people with particular relevance to citizenship, behavioural management, youth crime and youth justice. There will be an interactive/accessible website aimed particularly at young people as well as a teachers/youth workers pack. The project will also involve non-police community volunteers and aims to promote greater understanding of the Met's work on all levels. It will be open and accessible to all. That we have been successful in this very competitive heritage area, more so given the impending re-designation of funds to the London Olympics, reflects well on the importance of the Met's history and will, perhaps, open the door to its Historical Collection obtaining the serious support necessary to make it permanently accessible to all London's communities. The project is being lead by Dr Chris Alderman (Historian); Sioban Clark (Membership & Volunteer Co-ordinator of FOMPHC) will be the liaison with the Met. Police and volunteers.
